5 Reasons People See Me For Couples Therapy: Los Angeles

Updated: Dec 31

I offer couples therapy in Los Angeles, and LGBTQIA Couples Therapy and the clients I see all seek therapy for a variety of reasons, and obviously each couple's situation is unique, but it's safe to say that in general, the couples that I work with all want to have a healthy relationship.

However, common themes that bring couples to therapy often include communication difficulties, unresolved conflicts, and challenges in navigating major life transitions. In my experience using a family systems approach, I have found that these issues are often intertwined with larger family dynamics and individual struggles. By addressing these underlying complexities, I aim to help couples develop a deeper understanding of themselves and each other, ultimately promoting a healthy relationship dynamic that is more fulfilling and satisfying.

Many couples seek therapy when they feel stuck in a pattern of negative interactions or when trust has been damaged. Whether it's infidelity, lack of intimacy, or differing values, couples often find it difficult to navigate these challenges on their own. Through my approach, I strive to create a safe and supportive environment where couples can explore and address these issues together and work towards having healthier relationships. By helping each partner gain insight into their own roles in the relationship, I aim to facilitate positive change and promote a sense of unity and cooperation within the couple.

Couples Therapy In Los Angeles?

Communication Issues

In my experience, communication is the cornerstone of all successful relationships. When communication breaks down, it can lead to a host of difficulties within the relationship. As a therapist who specializes in relationship counseling, I have observed time and time again how poor communication can negatively impact the dynamics between partners.

My approach to addressing communication issues within couples therapy is grounded in the family systems theory. This approach focuses on the interconnectedness of each partner within the relationship and aims to improve communication by addressing the underlying family dynamics and patterns.

I work with couples to identify and understand the barriers to effective communication, whether it be past experiences, differing communication styles, or unresolved emotions. Through open and honest dialogue, I help couples develop new strategies for communicating effectively and fostering understanding and empathy within the relationship.

By creating a safe and supportive environment, my goal is to enable couples to navigate and resolve their communication issues in a way that strengthens their bond and fosters healthier relationships and a fulfilling life together.

Emotional Distance

Emotional distance can gradually develop in relationships, particularly as daily commitments and responsibilities pile up. This is further compounded when couples begin to prioritize their children over their relationship. Over time, this emotional distance can erode the bond between partners, leading to feelings of disconnection and dissatisfaction. The key to addressing this is to recognize the signs of emotional distance early on and take proactive steps to deepen the connection between partners.

Like many couples counselors, I utilize a family systems approach to couples therapy, which recognizes the interconnectedness of all family members and the impact of individual behaviors on the entire family unit. By addressing the underlying dynamics and communication patterns within the family, we can work towards bridging the emotional distance and fostering a more secure and intimate bond between partners. Through guided discussions, exercises, and interventions, couples can learn how to re-establish emotional closeness and strengthen their relationship, even amidst the demands of everyday life.

It is important to remember that emotional distance is a common challenge in many relationships, and seeking support through therapy can be a valuable step towards overcoming this obstacle. I encourage you to consider the benefits of addressing emotional distance within your relationship and taking the necessary steps to nurture and cultivate a deeper connection with your partner.

Sexual Issues

Sexual issues within an intimate relationship can be complex and sensitive, and addressing them in couples therapy can lead to greater understanding and intimacy. My approach to couples therapy involves utilizing a family systems framework, which acknowledges the interconnectedness of individuals within a relationship.

It is important to recognize that a lack of sexual intimacy can often stem from deeper emotional issues within the relationship. A couples therapist, will help you explore and address these underlying emotional barriers in order to improve their sexual connection.

Additionally, it is not uncommon for partners to have differing levels of sexual desire. This can lead to feelings of frustration, rejection, or inadequacy. Couples therapy can provide a safe and nonjudgmental space for partners to openly discuss their needs and desires, and work together towards a mutually satisfying sexual relationship.

By addressing both the emotional and physical aspects of sexual intimacy, couples can develop a better understanding of each other's needs and work towards a healthier and more fulfilling sexual relationship. If you and your partner are experiencing challenges related to sexual intimacy, I encourage you to seek professional support and guidance in a safe space.

Parenting Differences

When two individuals have conflicting viewpoints on parenting, it can create tension and disruption in the family dynamic. These differences in parenting styles can lead to misunderstandings, conflicts, and stress within the relationship. In many cases, children can exhibit symptoms of this strain through behavioral issues or a decline in academic performance.

As a practitioner who utilizes a family systems approach to couples therapy, I understand the significance of addressing these disparities in parenting. By focusing on the family as a whole and how each individual's actions and interactions influence one another, I aim to help couples navigate through their differences effectively. It is essential for both partners to acknowledge and respect each other's parenting styles, and work towards finding a common ground that will benefit not only the relationship, but also the well-being of the children.

Family therapy or marriage counseling can help in exploring these differences in a supportive and non-judgmental manner and I aim to create a safe space for couples to communicate and collaborate on their parenting strategies openly. Through effective communication and mutual understanding, couples can strengthen their relationship and cultivate a harmonious parenting approach that is conducive to the overall health and development of their children.

Conflict and Conflict Resolution

Conflicts are inevitable in any relationship, and understanding the underlying reasons for these conflicts is crucial in addressing and resolving them effectively. In my practice, I use a family systems approach to couples therapy, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of individuals within the family unit.

When it comes to conflicts between couples, it's important to pay attention to the content of the argument and the patterns of conflict that emerge. Whether the conflict is centered around issues such as sex, money, control, or emotional expressions of care, understanding the underlying dynamics at play is vital in finding a resolution.

In addressing conflict, it's important for couples to communicate openly and honestly while also being willing to listen and understand each other's perspectives. This involves setting aside personal defenses and actively working towards empathy and understanding.

Healthy conflict resolution involves finding common ground, compromising, and seeking solutions that work for both individuals. By approaching conflicts with a willingness to understand and empathize, couples can work towards resolving their differences and strengthening their relationship.

My Approach To Couples Therapy: A Los Angeles

My approach to therapy and couples therapy is rooted in the family systems perspective, which acknowledges that individuals are deeply interconnected within their relationships. I will examine the patterns of interaction and relating that may contribute to the specific issues you seek to address. We can work together to disrupt and ultimately change these patterns by identifying and understanding them.

In my practice, I have found that couples often find themselves caught in repetitive cycles of behavior without being fully aware of it. Through our work together, I will offer insight and guidance to help you both recognize these patterns and develop healthier ways of relating to one another. I offer online couples counseling sessions, and see people in my office for couples therapy in Los Angeles / West Hollywood.

I believe that by focusing on the dynamics within the relationship, we can unearth the underlying causes of conflict and create meaningful, lasting change. My aim is to provide a safe and supportive environment for both partners to explore their experiences and work towards a more harmonious and fulfilling relationship. Occasionally it might be important to seek individual therapy so that your current relationship is supported in work outside the relationship or marriage therapy.
